In general, the most important qualities we value from potential new members are passion, adaptability, and a dedication to learning. While experience can be helpful, we would much rather take inexperienced applicants who are driven to make our team a success and can learn on the go vs. applicants who aren’t excited.
We are a brand new project team similar to a startup; we are starting from the ground up to quickly form a minimum viable product that is unique and could be used by the general public through further development. A new cycle to do so will occur every year, and this involves creating a business model and garnering funding from companies annually. We are continuously improving and restructuring our organization practices to meet the needs and expectations of members.
Our team is small, fast-paced, and requires each and every member to be willing to take initiative to improve the project and team as a whole. You will get the opportunity to build a biosensor and business model from ideation to prototype, and your ideas and commitment will heavily influence the progress of the project because of how small our team is. Both Business and R&D members are essential to our project because the competition culminates in numerous pitch decks, proposals, and networking events in the Netherlands, where the translation potential of our device and the science behind it are both equally important. Therefore, if you are applying to R&D or Business, you can expect a similar time commitment regardless of the subteam. Because our team is in the early stages of development, incoming members will get the unique opportunity to gain extensive leadership experience in technical areas, and will be a part of the exciting process of building our presence as a new project team at Cornell.
Therefore, if you are interested in a fast-paced environment, the opportunity to lead large parts of a project, learn new engineering and business practices every day, and are passionate about creating a sensor that can impact people’s daily lives, then we want to see your application!
